Sinossi / Synopsis:
Masafer Yatta è un agglomerato di venti villaggi al confine sud della Cisgiordania. Il primo ricordo di Basel Adra, che qui è nato nel 1996, è l’arresto di suo padre, mentre protestava contro gli espropri voluti dallo Stato di Israele, che di quel territorio sostiene di aver diritto di fare zona di addestramento militare. Una violenza che va avanti da decenni, e che Basel e altri hanno iniziato a filmare autonomamente, a rischio della propria vita. Per mostrare al resto del mondo, tramite quelle testimonianze video strazianti e inequivocabili, l’ingiustizia e l’oppressione che continuano a subire. Anche Yuval Abraham, giornalista israeliano e amico di Basel, scrive delle demolizioni, sperando di attirare l’attenzione, dentro e fuori la sua nazione. Il film è stato girato da un collettivo di quattro registi palestinesi e israeliani, le loro riprese si estendono tra l’estate del 2019 e ottobre 2023.

Masafer Yatta is a cluster of twenty villages on the southern edge of the West Bank. Basel Adra, born here in 1996, first remembers his father’s arrest while protesting the expropriation of land by Israel, which claims it has the right to use the land as a military training zone. This violence has been going on for decades, and Basel and others have begun filming it themselves, risking their lives. Their harrowing and unequivocal video testimonies show the rest of the world the injustice and oppression they continue to endure. Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist and friend of Basel, also writes about the demolitions, hoping to draw attention, both inside and outside his country. The film was shot by a team of four Palestinian and Israeli directors, and their filming spanned the summer of 2019 and October 2023.

Un’amicizia percorre la distanza tra vita e morte. Mentre Shonali è incaricata di filmare il suicidio assistito della sua amica Chika Kapadia, Nilesh Maniyar le chiede di rivolgere la telecamera anche verso sé stessa. Insieme, Shonali, Nilesh e il montatore Tushar Ghogale intrecciano un racconto sulla dignità nella morte attraverso la lente dell’amicizia. Ironia della sorte, l’ambientazione è la bellissima Svizzera, sfondo di molti film indiani di grande successo.

A friendship spans the distance between life and death. While Shonali is tasked with filming her friend Chika Kapadia’s assisted suicide, Nilesh Maniyar asks her to turn the camera on herself as well. Together, Shonali, Nilesh, and editor Tushar Ghogale weave a tale of dignity in death through the lens of friendship. Ironically, the setting is beautiful Switzerland, the backdrop for many successful Indian films.
