Synopsis:
Toto, uno degli ultimi cercatori d’oro della Terra del Fuoco, ha 60 anni e non è più quello di una volta. Dopo 40 anni di lavoro in miniera, è stanco e la sua salute è a rischio. Ma non può andare in pensione, perché non ha diritto alla previdenza sociale. Suo figlio Jorge, un giovane cowboy, cercherà di risolvere il problema progettando e costruendo una macchina per la raccolta dell’oro che dovrebbe garantirgli un futuro migliore.

Toto, one of the last gold diggers in Tierra del Fuego, is 60 years old and he is no longer the same as before. After 40 years working in the mine, he is tired and his health is at risk. But he just can’t retire, because he doesn’t qualify for social security. His son Jorge, a young cowboy, will endeavor to solve this problem by designing and building a gold harvesting machine that should bring them a better future.

Twenty-five years after a renowned ethno-botanical study in the Ecuadorian Amazon region inhabited by the Waorani, the central figures involved reunite. Members of the community talk about the genocidal colonization of their people since the arrival of Christian missionaries. The main threats to their survival are now the oil and timber industries.

Se l’estinzione causata dall’uomo fosse una coreografia, ecco come l’abbiamo eseguita. Il grande alca era il pinguino originale, ma scomparve dalla Terra a metà del 1800. Il regista viaggia per incontrare diverse persone e luoghi legati a questo uccello estinto, dalla casa dell’autore di *The Great Auk* in Inghilterra al vecchio museo zoologico di Copenaghen, dove le viscere degli ultimi due grandi alche sono conservate in barattoli di vetro. Attraverso storie e osservazioni, ripercorriamo la vita di una specie che non tornerà mai più.

If human-made extinction was a choreography, this is how we have performed it. The great auk was the original penguin, but disappeared from the Earth in the mid-1800s. The filmmaker travels around to meet various people and places with a connection to the extinct bird, from the home of the author of The Great Auk in England to the old zoological museum in Copenhagen, where the entrails of the last two great auks are kept in glass jars. Through stories and observations we look back on the life of a species that will never return.
